Stopping by Authors & Readers Book Corner today is New York native, Latoya Chandler . Chandler enjoys writing, coaching, reading and spending time with her family. She started creating her characters in 2013, after her life changed drastically when she realized she wasn’t crazy and the people talking-or the voices in her head were actually the voices of birthing characters. The writing began and before she knew it, Mrs. Chandler had penned her first novel. Torn, Don’t Need You, But I Want You, was the first of three installments to the Torn Trilogy. Torn, released this past January was also the first book Chandler debuted under her very own Publishing Company, “Passion-Publications, LLC.”
Chandler is an author and publisher with over twenty books credited to her name. She is the voice of reason and inspiration for many published and aspiring authors. Chandler will be releasing a new title in March of 2017, The Case Manager, and she stopped by to chat with us today about it and share a little about her writing style.
A&RBC: Tell us a little about your writing process.
LC: I have to listen to old school R&B, preferably Tamia Radio on Pandora. I would then put on a bubble bath and read over my last chapter while in the tub. When I am done I just sit and enjoy my bath with a glass of wine and that allows the characters to wake up and start talking to me.
A&RBC: Tell us four words that describe your writing style.
LC: Crazy, sexy, fearless, and ground breaking.
A&RBC: What is the central message you want readers to take from your books?
LC: Be careful what you do…karma is real.
A&RBC: What is your biggest challenge as a writer and publisher?
LC: Making sure I make time to promote, challenge and market myself. Making sure I find balance between the two.
A&RBC: I notice your also a writing coach, what is your process in helping writers start their writing journey?
LC: Several of my clients come saying they’re not together and that they have pieces here and there. I simple remind them that a puzzle comes in pieces and you start with one piece until it all comes together. The same concept is to be applied to writing.
A&RBC: As a motivational speaker, what topics do you speak on?
LC: I discuss real life situations. I throw myself out there and use my life experiences as an example. I am a proud single mom turned entrepreneur and I encourage mothers/single moms aka Mommy Moguls to allow their motherhood to inspire them not retire them.
A&RBC: Tell is a little about Candice Brown.
LC: Candice Brown is a fourteen year old girl who becomes pregnant and because of her pregnancy, her parents send her off to a group home, Hope House, which houses teen mothers. Candice’s world is turned upside at Hope House and she ends up more damaged than she already was. Candice and the Hope House crew will leave you asking yourself, could you survive when life is set on punishing you for existing? When you’re backed up against the wall, do you continue to fight or crumble in defeat?
A&RBC: What is your favorite motto or quote?
LC: “Allow your motherhood to inspire you not retire you; all while standing six inches above your excuses.”
A&RBC: Where can readers find you?
