First Lines Fridays #15

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. I first saw this on Life of A Literary Nerd  and decided this would be fun to start adding to my blog. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

*Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page

*Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first

*Finally… reveal the book!

Beau Devereaux stared at the clock, watching the minutes tick by. The only noise in the stuffy classroom was the monotonous, raspy voice of his teacher. Like a thoroughbred chomping at the bit, he waited to bolt.

Death by the River by Alexandrea Weis  & Lucas Astor

Amazon Description

SOME TRUTHS ARE BETTER KEPT SECRET.
SOME SECRETS ARE BETTER OFF DEAD.

Along the banks of the Bogue Falaya River, sits the abandoned St. Francis Seminary. Beneath a canopy of oaks, blocked from prying eyes, the teens of St. Benedict High gather here on Fridays. The rest of the week belongs to school and family—but weekends belong to the river.

And the river belongs to Beau Devereaux.

The only child of a powerful family, Beau can do no wrong. Handsome. Charming. Intelligent. The star quarterback of the football team. The “prince” of St. Benedict is the ultimate catch.

He is also a psychopath.

A dirty family secret buried for years, Beau’s evil grows unchecked. In the shadows of the ruined St. Francis Abbey, he commits unspeakable acts on his victims and ensures their silence with threats and intimidation. Senior year, Beau sets his sights on his girlfriend’s headstrong twin sister, Leslie, who hates him. Everything he wants but cannot have, she will be his ultimate prize.

As the victim toll mounts, it becomes crystal clear that someone has to stop Beau Devereaux.

And that someone will pay with their life.

Alexander the Great conquered the land were a young woman named Roxana lives. Alexander claims her after seeing her dance at a feast. She’s feisty, which turns him on and makes him want her even more. Roxana agrees to marry him for the sake of her family but she isn’t happy. This starts the journey of Alexander and Roxana and I couldn’t get enough of it.

This book had wonderful settings and descriptions. The author does a great job involving her readers in the action of the story. It was easy to visualize the descriptions and invest in the characters. The love shared between Alexander and Roxana was beautifully written as was the rest of the book.

Realm is my kind of historical fiction read. It is laced with battles, love, acts of conquering, loss and pain. It’s strong and stubborn characters wouldn’t let me put this book down. I felt all the feelings while reading it. I recommend this book to those who love historical fiction and romance.
