Episode 84 Interview with Fantasy Romance Author Kimberly Lemming

Listen to Episode Here

Welcome to A Reader’s Book Corner!

In today’s episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Fantasy Romance Author Kimberly Lemming. She had the best bio and I had to share it:

Kimberly Lemming is on an eternal quest to avoid her calling as a main character. She can be found giving the slip to that new werewolf that just blew into town and refusing to make eye contact with a prince of a far-off land. Dodging aliens looking for Earth booty can really take up a girl’s time. But when she’s not running from fate, she can be found writing diverse fantasy romance. Or just shoveling chocolate in her maw until she passes out on the couch.

We discuss what lead her to becoming a writer, her love for romance, her Mead Mishap series, her writing process and more.

Sneak Peek of A Glimpse of Music by Sydney Winward

The breeze whispered through the few leaves remaining glued to the trees as winter approached on autumn’s wing.

Her blistered hands ached at the reminder. Chopping wood proved to be too difficult for her small frame. But she had to try again. She had no choice if she wanted to keep her daughters warm during the winter.

By the time they reached the path leading to the house on the outskirts of the small village they now lived in, her entire body ached from the protesting muscles in her arm to the screaming pain of her leg.

And then she stopped short when she spotted the house.

Dread tightened in her stomach as her gaze rested on the red paint plastered on one side of the wall, dripping down gray stone like streams of blood.

Murderer.

Fear slammed into her heart as she stared at the house for a long minute, waiting for someone to rush out of the trees with weapons drawn.

The property remained quiet. Eerily quiet.

“What does that say, Mama?” Maisy asked inquisitively. She began spelling it out. “M-U-R—”

“Nothing!” She quickly turned her daughter away and grabbed her hand, cautiously approaching the house. They passed through the wooden gate connected to the property’s waist-high stone wall. They walked across crisp grass and wilted wildflowers and finally stopped before the arched wooden door of the small, two-story structure. Her fingers shook as she wrapped them around the door handle and turned.

It was locked.

Relief escaped on her sigh as she unlocked it with the key and ushered her girls inside. To Maisy, she said, “Get your little sister supper, will you? I’ll be inside in a minute.”

Or a few…

Her gaze despondently turned to the dripping red paint. Last week, her cow had been stolen. And this week, it was defacement.

Ignoring her protesting leg, she gathered a scrub brush, soap, and water before kneeling on the cold ground. She began to clean.

Red bled into red, quickly tainting the bowl of water. The scrub brush oozed paint like a bloody wound. Her leg throbbed against the cold, brittle ground. An unforgiving chill shivered down her spine.

But she did not cry.

And she did not curse.

She deserved this. But her daughters did not.

Sneak Peek of Horoscopes and Oaths by Rhiannon Lee

I wrapped an arm around him and pulled his head into my lap. “Gathering forces must be tough work, huh?” I asked.

He mumbled something I couldn’t make out and nodded his head. The poor thing. I stroked his hair and kissed the side of his head, earning me a hair in my mouth for my kindness. He seemed so peaceful; I was trying desperately not to draw attention to myself while I attempted to extract the stupid thing. I worked it around with my tongue until it was resting on my lower lip and then tried to push it out of my mouth with a puff of breath.

Gilly looked over at me and cocked an eyebrow. I shook my head and frowned, then shh’ed her as quietly as possible. The hair was still lodged. Apparently, I had only managed to work part of it forward, the other half was wedged between my skin and molars.

She went back to eating, and I went back to trying to get the dumb hair out of my mouth. Every few seconds, she would glance up with a smirk. I rolled my eyes.

Cain was making soft breathy noises. Obviously, he had fallen asleep. Then he rolled over and stretched. His face was now pointed up at me, but his eyes were sealed shut. I now had no hope of dislodging myself from under him without waking him. Great.

If anyone ever wrote a book about me, I hoped they would leave the part about the glorious and brave queen of hell getting trapped under her lover with a hair stuck between her teeth. Knowing my luck, they’d write about it in great detail. I let out a huff, fluffing my bangs upward, and felt the hair slide further back against my throat.

I gagged but tried to repress it as much as I could. My eyes watered through my struggle. Finally, at my wit’s end, I gingerly moved one hand from under Cain and fished for the culprit threatening to wake my sweet dear companion.

Gilly was nearly in hysterics, at least as much as possible while trying to be quiet. I side eyed her while I desperately tried to grab the hair from the back of my mouth.

I finally felt it and pinched it between two fingers. Victory! As I was retrieving it, it slipped, and I lost it, but at least I knew where it was now. I found it again and pulled. Just as I pulled it all the way out, the damn door opened a third time.

Bohden barged in. “We are ready!” he announced, pulling Cain from his slumber with a start.

The sleeping man sat straight up, catching my chin. My jaw cracked against his head and pain shot through my face. “Motherfuc…” I hissed. I tasted iron.
