Q & A with CB Samet

How do you maintain your creativity?

I have a full-time day job so my weekly writing consists of squeezing in time in the evenings around the boys’ dinner and activities. I find a change of scenery is motivation. I write copiously on vacations or plane rides, especially when there is no distraction from emails or social media. Also, I brainstorm about novels on walks or runs so I have to mix in these breaks from staring at a screen or notebook.

Describe your book in one sentence or fewer than 25 words.

Ragnarok happened. Survivors converged on earth many millennia ago, breeding and blending with humans. Now, a secret battle of bloodlines is being waged in the shadows of the real world.

What do you hope people will get out of your book?

First and foremost, I hope people get enjoyment—an escape to a fantasy world of magic and mayhem woven with romance. Next, I hope that readers will relate to the characters’ struggles. While we may not have magic and the world isn’t on the brink of destruction, we all face intermittent overwhelming challenges. We may react to these challenges as the characters in my urban fantasy series do—fear, insecurity, anger, and self-doubt—before we transform those feelings into productive engery to face the task at hand.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

My superpower of choice would be psychokinesis—the ability to move objects with my mind. After all, it’s a rather Jedi trait to have (more than just moving rocks, though). As a writer, I envision churning more books out if I could jog and write at the same time… while walking the dog! Imagine how easy I could fix my next cup of inspirational coffee without disrupting the writing process. As a mother of two boys, I could be reining hide-and-seek champion forever (insert diabolic laugh here); I picture myself levitating to a closet ceiling, undetected. And, with the ability to manipulate objects, I could finally beat my husband in tennis! Of course, I would also use my powers toward achieving world peace.

Do you have a favorite author who you look to for inspiration?

In my youth, I enjoyed Dan Brown, John Grisham, and Tom Clancy. I devoured Michael Crichton books. More recently, I’ve picked up a lot of Nora Roberts books. She writes such an array of contemporary romance, paranormal romance, thrillers, and romantic suspense that she’s inspired me to explore multiple genres with my own writing. I also admire her determination and work ethic. In addition, I enjoy Janet Evanovich, Lee Child, Jim Butcher, Sandra Brown, and Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling).

Outside of writing, what do you consider to be fun?

Pina coladas and getting caught in the rain! But more practically… I like playing tennis, family time, beach trips, jogging, and walking the dog (we have a 16 year-old Jack Russell Terrier). And of course, I like to read. I’ve always got a paperback at home, an ebook on my phone, and an audiobook for my commute.

On what are you currently working?

I am currently writing Book 2 in this series

The current sequence of this series is as follows:

  • Raven’s Flight, prequel novella
  • Raine Down, Book 1
  • Rosalyn’s Run, novella
  • Storm Surge, Book 2 (releases Spring 2023)
  • Anka’s Orb, novella
  • Sky Fall, Book 3

Sneak Peek of Prison Break Hostage by Anna J. Stewart

Ashley scanned the room, glanced toward the thick glass windows overlooking the dense forest. She looked to her bags, mind racing as she tried to think what she could use as a weapon. Needles, scalpels, in a pinch one of the bags themselves. He’d killed people and had been locked up for who knew how long. She braced herself as he passed by her again, this time to shove the curtains closed. The room darkened, then went bright again when he clicked on a bedside lamp.

Despite her wobbly legs, Ashley remained on her feet and watched every single move he made.

“They think you’ll be mine. You’re safe.”

“Safe?” she croaked.

He inclined his head, nodded in agreement. “Safer than if you weren’t.

Regardless of their loitering, right now Taras and Olena are more worried about Valeri than they are you. You’d squash Badger like a spider if he tried anything and he knows it. Javi’s down an arm, and besides, he’s not the violent type. That leaves you one option for protection.” He surprised—no, he shocked—her by walking over to the bookcase, perusing the contents as if he was in a public library. “Me.”

He made it all sound so…simple. And yet nothing was simple about being locked in a bedroom with a convicted murderer.

“Where are we?”

“Knowing won’t do you any good.”

But knowing might keep her sane. “Where are we?”

“The last sign I saw before we turned off the highway was for Lassen National Forest.”

Her mind raced, trying to remember something, anything, about their location, but as she was new to California, her frame of reference was limited.

“Asking questions is only going to get you killed, so I’d suggest you stop.”

He picked out a thriller, read the back cover copy, set it aside. “I’ll do what I can to keep you safe, but you’ll have to do your part.”

“And I’m just supposed to believe that? That you’ll protect me?”

“Given your other choice is to stand there in a panic, I’d say it’s the better one.” He didn’t even bother to glance at her. “I won’t hurt you, Dr. Ashley.”

She wanted to believe him. More than she wanted her next breath.

Goodreads * Amazon

I wanted to review this book with an understanding that is was a thriller with a hint of mystery. It was more of a romantic suspense book with a hint of mystery.

Tasha is a fashion designer that is close to a group of women and now one of their members is dead. Tasha wants to know what happened while trying to land a deal with an investor for her clothing line. This had me interested especially her wanted to find out who killed her friend.

This book is told in Tasha and Mitsuo ‘s point of view via different chapters, which goes along with the romantic suspense of it all. What threw me off was Mitsuo, the investor and his desire to have Tasha for himself. This is when it was clear that this was more romantic suspense than mystery solving. Don’t get me wrong I like romantic suspense books just not mixed in when there is a mystery to solve.

The chapters with Mitsuo took me away from the story because I wanted more on Rory’s death. I did like that Tasha was a “I’m not taking no stuff, ” kind of woman. She spoke her mind and I did like how she handled Mitsuo after meeting him. He was a little too much and came on very strong and sure of himself.

Overall, for me this would have worked better if the romantic suspense was not there and it focused on the mystery and Tasha working through the mystery. This book may have not been for me but will not stop me from reading more of L. R. Starr’s work.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

L.R. Starr is a lover of mysteries, witty dialogue, suspense, romance, and fantasy. If you like to travel through your books strap in for the ride she’ll take you across the country.

When she’s not I’m writing she’s usually exploring, and coming up with yet another devious plot or pursuing her other love which is painting and drawing. Enjoy the bedlam friends!
