Book Review: The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I finally found a book by Jennifer Lynn Barnes that I actually liked. A young woman receives an inheritance she knows nothing about, which leads to the adventure the book takes you on.

About The Book

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why – or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man’s touch—and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he’s determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather’s last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

My Thoughts

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This YA Mystery was everything I was looking for in this genre. It’s hard to find good young adult thrillers and mysteries, but The Inheritance Games had it all.

Avery Gambs is thrown into a mansion with the grandsons and their mothers of the late Tobias Hawnthorne (love his name). She doesn’t know any of them and can’t understand why Tobias left his estate to her. As you read, it becomes clear this maybe another one of Tobias’ games he plays with his grandsons.

Avery is in danger while trying to work with Grayson, Jameson and Xander, but I couldn’t tell by whom. I don’t think she should trust any of them and I don’t believe she should let Libby, her sister, as loose as she does because her sister is not thinking of the problems that come with being wealthy.

I liked that the characters are so mysterious especially the three grandsons. I kept thinking this family has alot of secrets that I hope come out more in the next book. I also liked the whole time reading it, I couldn’t trust any of the characters, which made the book more intriguing. I look forward to reading book two, The Hawthorne Legacy.

But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.

Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. Nubia: The Real One by L. L. McKinney

Releases: February 23, 2021

Purchase at Barnes & Noble, Amazon

Can you be a hero…if society doesn’t see you as a person?

Nubia has always been a little bit…different. As a baby she showcased Amazonian-like strength by pushing over a tree to rescue her neighbor’s cat. But despite her having similar abilities, the world has no problem telling her that she’s no Wonder Woman. And even if she were, they wouldn’t want her. Every time she comes to the rescue, she’s reminded of how people see her: as a threat. Her moms do their best to keep her safe, but Nubia can’t deny the fire within her, even if she’s a little awkward about it sometimes. Even if it means people assume the worst.

When Nubia’s best friend, Quisha, is threatened by a boy who thinks he owns the town, Nubia will risk it all–her safety, her home, and her crush on that cute kid in English class–to become the hero society tells her she isn’t.

From the witty and powerful voice behind A Blade So Black, and with endearing and expressive art by Robyn Smith, comes a vital story for today about equality, identity, and kicking it with your squad.

This Is Us for teens, this luminous and heartbreaking contemporary novel follows a girl caught between two brothers as the three of them navigate family, loss, and love over the course of two summers. For fans of Far From the TreeEmergency Contact, and Nina LaCour.

Before she kissed one of the Cohen boys, seventeen-year-old Jessi Rumfield knew what it was like to have a family—even if, technically, that family didn’t belong to her. She’d spent her childhood in the house next door, challenging Rowan Cohen to tennis matches while his older brother, Luke, studied in the background and Mel watched over the three like the mother Jessi always wished she had.

But then everything changed. It’s been almost a year since Jessi last visited the Cohen house. Rowan is gone. Mel is in remission and Luke hates Jessi for the role she played in breaking his family apart. Now Jessi spends her days at a dead-end summer job avoiding her real mother, who suddenly wants to play a role in Jessi’s life after being absent for so long. But when Luke comes home from college, it’s hard to ignore the past. And when he asks Jessi to pretend to be his girlfriend for the final months of Mel’s life, Jessi finds herself drawn back into the world of the Cohens. About The Book

Everyone in Fairview knows the story.

Pretty and popular high school senior Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend, Sal Singh, who then killed himself. It was all anyone could talk about. And five years later, Pip sees how the tragedy still haunts her town.

But she can’t shake the feeling that there was more to what happened that day. She knew Sal when she was a child, and he was always so kind to her. How could he possibly have been a killer?

Now a senior herself, Pip decides to reexamine the closed case for her final project, at first just to cast doubt on the original investigation. But soon she discovers a trail of dark secrets that might actually prove Sal innocent . . . and the line between past and present begins to blur. Someone in Fairview doesn’t want Pip digging around for answers, and now her own life might be in danger.

My Thoughts

A suspenseful young adult mystery with unsuspected twist.

Pip decides to work on a five year old murder case for her final project for school. She wants to prove Sal Singh didn’t kill his girlfriend, Andie Bell, and didn’t kill himself. I don’t believe she knew what she was getting herself into opening old wounds. Pip teams up with Sal’s younger brother, Ravi, who wants just as much to prove his brother’s innocence.

This was just what I needed, a great mystery with twists and turns I didn’t see coming. The list of suspects kept me on guard while Pip and Ravi found clues and tried to piece them together. I will say the character development was on point in this book and they fueled the story.

It was hard to feel sorry for Andie even though I wanted to. I really liked Pip because she was determined to get answers and I would want her in my corner. The reveal at the end was shocking even though I only had it half way figured out. This is a young adult mystery you want to read. I’m definitely getting the sequel.
