In Leaving Annalise by Pamela Fagan Hutchins, Katie, an attorney is back and in the middle of renovation on her home. Katie has been dating Bart, a chef until an old boyfriend resurfaces.  Katie realizes that her heart belongs to Nick, a private investigator and she breaks it off with Bart. Bart does not seem to take the news very well and starts to harass Katie. While trying to move forward with her relationship with Nick and staying clear of Bart, Katie also has to deal with the spirit of Annalise that stays in her home.

Nick comes back bringing baggage but can’t stay away from the love of his life. Nick is helping his sister get away from her abusive boyfriend, Derek. While helping his sister, Nick takes over the care of his nephew, Taylor. Nick believes that his relationship with Katie will work as long as she can adjust to having a child around.  Nick and Katie both will have to stay on their toes when Derek and Bart come a knocking. Will they both survive the terrors in their lives?

Leaving Annalise is about relationships and staying out of harm’s way. This book started off slow but picked up with some shocking twists. This book had some suspense, romance and mystery. I appreciated the mental instability in Bart and Derek’s characters as well as the island theme but the jumbie Annalise did nothing for me. I have not read book one in this series but I do recommend Leaving Annalise to others.
